Maori Mahdi

I found some interesting information based on FBI files and other sources of a half cast Maori named Wallace Dodd Ford wandering through America who the FBI believed was Master Fard Mohammed, the founder of a religious movement called the Temple of Allah.

Years after Master Fard’s disappearance the FBI started a new search for him from 1942 to the sixties; because of the rise of Malcom X and the religious movement he helped create (now known as the Nation of Islam) had become increasingly popular. They searched for Master Wallace Dodd Fard without any success but did find a Wallie Dodd Ford, a half cast Maori who fought in World War 1 and had a criminal record for selling alcohol out of his cafĂ© in LA. According to them, after being released from jail, he changed his identity, to become a preaching silk salesman from Mecca named Master Fard Mohammed. The FBI only new of Wallace Fard from Elijah Mohammed until they found Wallie Ford’s ex Hazel Barton.
She told the FBI she had last seen him in 1933, when he told her he was leaving to go back to NZ where he came from. This was the last anyone heard or saw of Wallie and it matched up with Master Fard’s disappearance in 1934. The investigation went on and became the most expensive FBI investigation on a civilian in America’s history. Most of the information I have, came from Hazel Barton’s statements she gave to the FBI but it is not reliable because the FBI in those days was not reliable, and the Nation of Islam say a completely fantastical story of Master Fard’s background.

During that time in New Zealand I thought it was interesting to note that there were quite a few Maori who started religious groups and became known to there people as propets and messiahs.
To me it's interesting that she would claim he was from New Zealand. Why? I dont think there would've been many Maori willing or even able to go to America in those days. Most Maori were poor and the ones that weren't were usually focused on easing the ill effects of colonialism.
Whether W.D. Fard and W.D. Ford is the same person remains a mystery to this day.

Niue

My first trip here, back to my roots, where my Mother's from. I decided to go after I finished illustrating a Niuean book which is due out sometime in 2012. Once I saw it for myself I realised my illustrations didn't really do the place justice. Such a beautiful place. Check it out here
